The Master Patternmakers Association of NSW,
Incorporated, was established in the 1950's to
foster and enhance the professional interests of its
members and to promote the trade of patternmaking.
The Association was incorporated in 1984 and current
membership stands at 24 members. The
Association provides information and resources for
members to keep abreast of new technologies and
developments in the patternmaking trade.
Our members actively encourage the education of
patternmaking, including the job opportunities for apprentices in the patternmaking
trade. An apprenticeship is of four years duration and TAFE is attended one
day per week for three years to supplement the on-the-job training. Study subjects
include: Trade Theory, Pattern Design, Practical Trade Calculations, Trade Drawing,
Foundry Practice and Vacuum Form Tooling. An apprenticeship is obtained by first
approaching an employer in the industry. Applicants should have completed a minimum
of Year 10, have a good understanding of technical drawing, geometry and mathematics and
also have manual dexterity and good woodworking skills. Further information
regarding apprenticeships can be obtained by contacting the Master Patternmakers
Association of NSW Inc (ph: 9905 2245) or the Sydney Institute of Technology, Engineering
Patternmaking Section (Ph: 9217 3171). Due to TAFE restructuring, the
current training offer is under review.
